Need a Rest?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Have you ever felt weighed down?  I know I have.  It doesn’t seem to take long nowadays before we can find ourselves in a position where we feel like we’ve got the weight of the world on our shoulders.  That weight can be pretty exhausting!  Whether you are in school or in the working world (or in my case, just about to jump right back into school), there are a ton of things out there that can quickly consume all your time and energy and leave you feeling like you have nothing left for anything else.

As Christians, isn’t it a relief to know that we have someone to go to when we need rest?  Jesus tells us in the scripture above that He is a source of rest for those who come to Him.  He is like a drink of cool refreshing water to a thirsty soul.  He tells us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light, because God never places more on any of us than we can handle.  The Lord is a gentle and humble master.  Who better to turn to when we are needing refuge from the world and all its cares and worries than our Father in Heaven, who loves us more than we will ever know?
